Tony G. Carvalho, 2014 Frank H. Lang Scholarship Recipient

Lang, Richert & Patch is proud to announce Tony G. Carvalho as the winner of the 2014 Frank H. Lang Merit Scholarship. Awarded annually and based solely on merit, the Scholarship is a grant of $1,000.00.

Mr. Carvalho is currently a second-year law student at the University of San Diego School of Law (c/o 2016). He was born in Tulare, California, and has lived in the Central Valley most of his life. His parents operate a small dairy farm in southern Fresno County and, throughout his years in college and prior to pursuing his law career, Mr. Carvalho helped manage the family business. He trained employees, managed crop production, and oversaw all aspects of animal husbandry. His many years on the farm have imparted a great appreciation for agriculture, hard work, and the satisfaction that comes from a job well done.

After graduating with honors from California State University, Fresno, Mr. Carvalho went on to receive a Master of Arts in History. His graduate thesis explored how the Catholic Diocese of Fresno responded to the conflict between Cesar Chavez’s religious farm workers’ movement and local Catholic farmers in the Delano grape strike. His thesis sought to bring the greatest possible measure of objectivity to an era of high passions and contention in the Central Valley.

Due to many years of working in a multi-cultural environment and travels through Europe, including one year spent teaching English at a German private school, Mr. Carvalho has developed a knack for languages. He speaks fluent Spanish and Portuguese and looks forward to trips to the Azores Islands where he can reconnect with his Portuguese heritage.

Mr. Carvalho has demonstrated great enthusiasm for the challenges and opportunities presented by a law career. He has earned a spot on the University of San Diego National Mock Trial and Moot Court teams and will compete against law students from around the country. His interests include property, land use, immigration, and employment law. This summer, he will be working as a judicial extern for Federal Magistrate Judge Hon. Barbara A. McAuliffe. Mr. Carvalho is grateful for his selection as the 2014 Frank H. Lang Merit Scholarship winner and sincerely thanks everyone at Lang, Richert & Patch.
